Hermann Farm Distillery Tour

If you’re looking for a Friday activity that feels more grounded and intentional than the typical wine country experience, the Hermann Farm Distillery Tour is worth your time.

Set on a historic farm in Hermann, Missouri, this 1.5-hour guided tour offers a genuine connection to the area’s heritage, skilled craftsmanship, and rural landscape — exactly the kind of experience many people are seeking when they want to get away from the city.

A Legacy That Goes Back to the 1840s

The distillery sits on land where the Rasche family established their farm and small still site in the 1840s. German immigrants who settled this region brought with them traditions of farming and fermentation. Today, Hermann Farm Distillery continues that legacy by crafting spirits from locally grown ingredients, aged in Missouri white oak casks.

What makes this place stand out is the personal story behind it. The distiller, Derek LeRoy, grew up in the cellars at Hermannhof Winery, where his father Paul has been the winemaker for over 40 years. Derek earned a degree in viticulture and brings that deep understanding of fermentation to the spirits he creates now. This isn’t a corporate operation — it’s a continuation of real family knowledge and local tradition.

What You’ll Experience on the Tour

The guided tour takes you through the working distillery, including the aging barn, brandy cellar, and still room. You’ll learn about the process of turning farm-grown grain into finished spirits and how the use of Missouri white oak influences the final product.

It’s educational in the best way — informative without feeling overly technical. Many visitors appreciate the unhurried pace and the chance to ask questions in a peaceful setting with views of the surrounding farm.

At the end of the tour, you’ll do a tasting of their current lineup, which includes:

  • Sophie’s Gin — An American-style gin featuring blue juniper berries, elderflower, lavender, lemongrass, and lemon peel.

  • Cask Finished Gin — Sophie’s Gin rested in used bourbon barrels made from Missouri white oak.

  • Rasche Rye — A high-rye whiskey aged three years in charred Missouri oak and finished in spent Norton wine barrels (limited release).

  • Cask Strength Bourbon — A 75% corn mash bill, aged over four years in charred Missouri white oak, then bottled straight from the barrel at 124.5 proof (single barrel).

  • Sour Cherry Whiskey — A light corn whiskey proofed with natural cherry juice.

The tasting gives you a real sense of the range and quality they’re producing.

Why This Tour Appeals to So Many

People who enjoy this experience are often looking for something more meaningful than just another tasting. They like the combination of history, skilled craftsmanship, and the quiet rural setting. It feels authentic rather than staged.

Because the distillery is located on an actual working farm (rather than in town), the atmosphere is noticeably more peaceful. It’s a good match for visitors who want to slow down and engage with the story behind what they’re drinking.
