Hermann Wine Country Meets the Katy Trail: Why McKittrick Trailhead Makes a Great Base

McKittrick Trailhead

If you’re dreaming of a trip that combines biking the Katy Trail with exploring Hermann’s wine country, where you stay matters more than you might think.

A lot of people book right in downtown Hermann. It’s lively, walkable, and full of tasting rooms. But after a long day on the trail, many guests tell us they actually prefer a quieter spot just across the bridge — especially one that puts them steps from the Katy Trail itself.

That’s exactly what you get at The Mercantile on the Katy Trail in McKittrick.

Right on the Trail, Close to Everything

We’re located directly at the McKittrick Trailhead (Mile Marker 100.8), which means you can roll off the trail and be home in seconds. No driving, no loading bikes into cars. Just park your bike in the barn and you’re done for the day.

Yet you’re only about two minutes by car (or a short, pleasant bike ride) from downtown Hermann. That makes it easy to spend your afternoons wine tasting, shopping, or grabbing dinner, then return to a peaceful setting for the evening.

Real Apartment-Style Suites

Unlike traditional B&Bs where you might share walls or common spaces, our four suites feel like your own private apartment. Each one has:

  • A full kitchen (so you can cook or store snacks and drinks)

  • A private bathroom

  • In-suite washer and dryer (a game-changer after multi-day rides)

  • Comfortable beds and a relaxed, home-like feel

Guests often mention how nice it is to have that extra space and privacy, especially after a full day of riding or tasting.

Built for Cyclists

We designed this place with trail riders in mind. You’ll find secure bike storage in the barn, a bike wash station, basic tools, and a manual pump. You can bring your e-bike for the day if you want a more relaxed ride, or rent one in Hermann.

Many of our guests are repeat visitors who come specifically because they can ride, explore Hermann, and then actually rest in a quiet, comfortable space.

A Restored 1897 Building with Modern Comforts

The Mercantile is a beautifully restored 1897 Italianate mercantile building. You’ll still see original brickwork and tall windows, but we’ve added modern touches like fast Wi-Fi, smart TVs, and comfortable furnishings. It strikes a nice balance between living in 1897 historic charm and everyday convenience.

Is McKittrick Right for You?

This is a great fit if you want:

  • Easy, direct access to the Katy Trail

  • The option to explore Hermann without staying in the middle of the action

  • A private, apartment-style suite with a full kitchen

  • A quiet place to recharge after riding or wine tasting

It’s especially popular with cyclists doing multi-day trips and couples or small groups looking for a relaxed wine country base.
