Looking Back at 2025 and Ahead to the 2026 Season
Every so often, places people love disappear. Sports teams move. Businesses relocate. Traditions fade.
But we want to reassure you of one thing right away: Missouri’s Katy Trail—and the Mercantile on the Katy Trail—aren’t going anywhere.
Each year, hundreds of thousands of visitors travel the Katy Trail’s 237 scenic miles, and we’re proud to be part of that experience right here at the McKittrick Trailhead.
Winter on the Katy Trail: Our Season of Stewardship
Winter is the off-season for much of what we do at the Mercantile. While the trail quiets down and the redbuds wait for spring, this is the time of year when we reflect, repair, plan, and prepare.
We’ve officially completed two full years and are heading into our third full season.
Looking back at 2025 helped guide what we’re building toward in 2026—and we wanted to share a glimpse of what’s been happening behind the scenes.
What’s Changing (and What’s Staying the Same)
A few updates you may notice in the coming season:
Bike Rentals: Pedego Hermann has closed after two years of service. While we will no longer host an on-site e-bike rental vendor, we are refocusing the barn and grounds to better support cyclists who bring their own bikes.
The Barn & Outdoor Spaces: We’re sprucing up the barn and exploring the creation of a relaxed outdoor living space—perfect for unwinding after a day on the trail.
More Bike Storage: Additional bike racks are being added to improve storage and convenience for cyclists.
Honor System Fridge: Our honor-system fridge—run directly by us—is staying and continuing to evolve with guest favorites.
Care for a Historic Building: Historic buildings require constant TLC. We now have an official handyman and a new housekeeping vendor to ensure the Mercantile continues to be well-maintained, comfortable, and cared for.
Preparing for Spring 2026
This winter, we’ve been focused on the details that matter:
Optimizing HVAC systems
Deep cleaning and polishing throughout the building
Painting, reinforcing beds, and inspecting furniture
Refreshing signage for better wayfinding
Updating our reservation menu with exciting new food boards
These improvements may not always be flashy—but they’re essential to preserving the character, comfort, and longevity of a historic property like ours.
Looking Ahead
Spring will be here soon—and so will the Mercantile—ready for another season along the Katy Trail.
Whether you’re a cyclist, a repeat guest, or someone planning your first visit, we’re grateful to be part of your journey and proud to continue stewarding this special place in Missouri.
We can’t wait to welcome you back.
