June is a Great Time to Hit the Katy Trail
June is one of the most underrated months to enjoy the Katy Trail — and one of the smartest times to plan a family getaway.
Right after Hermann’s big Maifest celebration, the trail enters a sweet spot: services are fully open, the days are long, the scenery is lush and green, and you’ll often find more availability and easier booking than in peak spring or fall. It’s the perfect window for families looking for a relaxed outdoor adventure without the biggest crowds.
Ideal Weather for Biking & Outdoor Time in June
June brings warm days and long evenings — perfect for spending more time on the trail.
Daytime highs have generally stayed in the low-to-mid 80s with comfortable overnight lows in the 60s. Mornings and evenings are especially pleasant for riding, giving families plenty of time to explore at their own pace.
June is a Great Time to Hit the Katy Trail. The trail is in full summer mode with lush green scenery, wildflowers, and beautiful river views. While afternoon thunderstorms remain possible (normal for early summer), many days have been dry or only briefly wet.
With nearly 15 hours of daylight, you can easily plan relaxed rides in the cooler parts of the day. Just bring water, sunscreen, and a light rain layer — the Katy Trail stays very enjoyable with a little smart timing.
Whether you’re doing a short out-and-back from McKittrick or a longer ride toward Hermann or beyond, the conditions this June have been very rideable and family-friendly.
Kids Are Out of School — Perfect Family Activity
With school out, June is ideal for multi-generational trips or family vacations. Biking the Katy Trail is one of the best screen-free activities you can do together. The trail is flat and crushed limestone — manageable for kids and grandparents alike.
At The Mercantile on the Katy Trail, you’re literally steps from the trailhead at mile marker 100.8 in McKittrick. No loading bikes in the car. Just grab your helmets and roll out. Our private suites have full kitchens and plenty of space, making it easy to stay together as a family while still having room to spread out.
More Availability After Maifest (Shoulder Season Perk)
Maifest brings big crowds to Hermann and the surrounding area. Once it wraps up, June becomes a true shoulder month on this stretch of the Katy Trail. That often means:
Better room availability at popular spots like The Mercantile
Easier last-minute or mid-week bookings
A more relaxed vibe on the trail and in town
It’s one of the best times to get the dates you actually want without competing with peak-season demand.
Add-On Adventures: Golf, Hermann & History
Make your June trip even better with these nearby activities:
Golf at Loutre Shore Country Club — A beautiful 9-hole course just a short drive away in Hermann wine country. Great way to mix up the days.
Explore Hermann — Stroll the charming historic downtown, visit wineries and breweries, or catch events like the annual Town & Country Garden Tour (early June) or other summer happenings.
History & Gardens — Visit Deutschheim State Historic Site to learn about Hermann’s German heritage and abolitionist history, or enjoy the beautiful private and public gardens around town.
More Trails & Nature — Beyond the Katy Trail, there are additional paths, river views, and peaceful spots perfect for walking or birdwatching.

Is The Mercantile good for families with kids?
Yes. We have private suites with full kitchens, direct trail access, and space for multi-generational groups.
Where can we get groceries or supplies nearby?
Loutre Market is your best option for a full grocery store. They carry quality meats, fresh produce, and have a hot & cold deli. It’s conveniently located near Loutre Shore Country Club and just a short drive from The Mercantile. Open daily from 7:30 am to 8:00 pm.
Is there a gas station close by?
Yes — the Marathon Gas Station in Hermann (500 Market St) is the most convenient option. It offers gas, drinks, snacks, and an ATM. Many guests stop there on their way in or when heading into town.
Can we grill on the patio?
Yes! Many families and groups enjoy grilling on the patio at The Mercantile. It’s a relaxed way to end the day after riding. We recommend bringing your own grill supplies or picking up steaks, burgers, or BBQ from Loutre Market. Please follow basic fire safety and clean up after use so everyone can enjoy the space.

Yes — every suite at The Mercantile has a full kitchen with refrigerator, stove/oven, microwave, and all the basic cookware, dishes, and utensils you’ll need.
